…In Which Righteousness Dwells

But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwell. (2 Peter 3:10-13)

Within this portion Peter describes the Day of the Lord. It is a day where the earth and all the works on it will be destroyed. The only thing to remain is holiness and righteousness. To all who has been reconciled with Christ, and washed in His blood for the forgiveness of sin, there is an expectancy and a desire to hasten that day. However, all that endeavored to accomplish great things on earth while neglecting the state of their soul will face great despair as their life work will go up in smoke. The old earth will be destroyed to make place for the new. A place where righteousness will dwell.
