But I say to you, love [that is, unselfishly seek the best or higher good for] your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may [show yourselves to] be the children of your Father who is in heaven; for He makes His sun to rise on those who are evil and on those who are good… (Matt 5:44-45)
These words of Christ really hit home. Our human nature is quick to retaliate. Yet, God asks that in cases of great unfairness, that we should seek the best interest of our enemies and pray for them. Should we not do that they will go lost for all eternity. Our faith is being exercised when we pray for them… by that, our own heart is being protected and we bear witness that we are indeed God’s children.
