Marijuana Use and Motor Vehicle Crashes

Since 1996, 16 states and the District of Columbia in the United States have made it legal to use dagga for medical reasons. Even though dagga is the most common drug found in drivers, we’re not sure if it actually causes crashes.

To figure this out, researchers looked at 9 studies published in English over the last 20 years. These studies looked at whether using dagga makes it more likely for drivers to get into crashes.

They found that in these studies, the risk of being in a crash was higher for people who used dagga compared to those who didn’t. Even after considering other factors like how much dagga was in their system and how often they used it, the risk still went up. Overall, these findings suggest that using dagga while driving makes it more likely for someone to get into a car accident.
