And when He was in the house HE asked them, “What was it you disputed among yourselves on the road? But they kept silent, for on the road they had disputed among themselves who would be the greatest. (Mark 9:33-34)
Just before this portion, Jesus explained that He was about to suffer and die but rise on the third day. It was a time for intense teaching for his disciples. They therefore traveled unnoticed. Jesus realized that there was a dispute taking place. It was a dispute for a position, His position. The disciples were busy setting up their own hierarchy without His will and without His knowledge. But not quite, He did know…
And as soon as they entered the house, He questioned their bickering. They all remain silent. Was it not Jesus to appoint those to take up the work. Is it not God Himself who owns the work? He needed time to be alone with His disciples to lay the foundation of His Kingdom. The one who is the most important, is the one who is a servant of all. Friends are we prepared to be a servant to all, also to that one who is in need?
